TikTok Catalog Error: Image Aspect Ratio Is Not Supported (1:1 vs 9:16)

Fix the TikTok Catalog image aspect ratio error. Learn when square 1:1 product images fit catalog formats and when a 9:16 creative is needed for vertical placements.

Catalog product images and ad creatives are different

A TikTok catalog image is the product image supplied with an item, often through `image_link`. An ad creative is the asset used in a particular ad format or placement. The aspect ratio supported for a catalog carousel image may differ from the ratio expected by a vertical video or full-screen placement.

That is why changing every catalog image to 9:16 can be the wrong fix. First identify whether the error names the catalog image, a carousel asset, or the creative attached to the ad. Check the specifications for that exact format and market.

When to use 1:1

Square product images are a common catalog format. TikTok's catalog parameter guidance specifies square 1:1 images of at least 500 by 500 pixels for carousel use. Use a centered product, clean background, and enough margin so the item remains visible after platform cropping.

Keep the product fully inside the safe area and avoid placing important text near the edges. Confirm the image URL is publicly fetchable, ends in a supported file type such as JPG or PNG, and returns the actual image rather than an HTML page or blocked redirect.

When a 9:16 image or video is needed

Vertical 9:16 assets are designed for full-screen, mobile-first placements such as vertical video ads. That does not automatically mean the source catalog image must use 9:16. Some workflows can crop, extend, or adapt catalog images for an ad, while others expect a separate vertical creative.

Check the campaign and ad format's current asset requirements. If TikTok rejects an image for its ratio, compare the exact width and height of the source file with the required minimum and permitted ratio. Do not infer the requirement from a different placement.

How to fix the unsupported ratio error

Inspect the original image dimensions and calculate width divided by height. Create a compliant version for the required format instead of renaming or stretching the file. Use a square master image for catalog use when the catalog specification calls for 1:1, and create a separate vertical crop or composition when the ad format requires 9:16.

Update the catalog or creative source that actually produced the error, then refresh the item and preview the ad. Check for transparent padding, unusual dimensions, corrupted files, or an image URL that serves different content to TikTok's crawler.

Prevent repeat rejections

Store source images and format-specific derivatives separately. Validate file dimensions, MIME type, reachability, and safe margins before uploading. When one catalog serves several placements, keep a square product image for item data and prepare the required creative assets for each ad format.

This keeps the catalog consistent while giving each TikTok placement an image designed for its aspect ratio.
