Add a real GTIN, preserve MPN, or mark identifiers as unavailable

What limited performance means

Your products may remain active while quietly losing reach.

Google uses GTIN data to understand exactly which commercial product you sell and to match it with the wider product graph. When an identifier is expected but missing, Merchant Center can show “Limited performance due to missing identifiers [gtin]”. The listing may stay eligible, yet have fewer signals available for matching and optimization.

The fix depends on the product. Branded goods should use the genuine manufacturer GTIN whenever one exists. Products with an MPN should preserve it alongside the brand. Only genuinely identifier-free products should use identifier_exists=no.

Feedlinter audits the first 10,000 records for free so you can stop guessing from a Merchant Center sample and choose the correct action for each group.

  1. Measure

    Count records without GTIN

Scan the first 10,000 product records, report the gap in that sample and show representative issue context behind the warning.

    First 10,000 records
  2. Classify

Choose GTIN, MPN or no identifier

Add genuine manufacturer data at source. For products with neither GTIN nor MPN, use the conditional identifier_exists rule.

    No fabricated values
  3. Monitor

    Keep new gaps from accumulating

Refresh the proxy feed as products and variants are added, then review Merchant Center diagnostics after processing.

    Scheduled refreshes

Better product data means fewer disapprovals, steadier campaigns and more room to scale.

Still have a question? Talk to us

Does limited performance mean my product is disapproved?

Not necessarily. It is commonly a warning rather than a full rejection, but the product can have reduced matching signals and weaker visibility.

Can I use the SKU as a GTIN?

No. A store SKU is not a valid GTIN unless it is the genuine standardized identifier assigned to that product.

Should every product without GTIN use identifier_exists=no?

No. Use it only when the product truly has no manufacturer-assigned GTIN or MPN. Branded products should include their real identifier data where available.
